The pros and cons of
Open source programming
The main problems associated with Open
source is that it is not tailored to your
specific business needs and that (by virtue
of the fact it is offered free) there
is no support offered.
Anyone using Open source most likely
has the ability to modify the code or
will hire someone with the requisite knowledge
to do this on their behalf. Thus, you
( or your developer ) are supporting the
code from this point - which is a good
position to be in. Occasionally bugs may
be found in the code that were present
in the source distribution you selected
for use. Bugs of this nature are generally
fixed very quickly as the community has
many able people eager to implement a
solution quickly.
It can be seen that there are very strong
reasons for using Open source software
where appropriate. With massive savings
to be made from the outset plus the savings
in development time, it easy to see why
the use of Open source software increases
with each day.
